- 1 roll refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough, about 16.5 ounces
- 1 cup caramel sauce
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
That’s all you need!
A Few Ingredient Notes
Cookie dough: Regular refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough works perfectly. For a slightly different flavor, you can use a chocolate-flavored cookie dough if you find one you enjoy.
Caramel sauce: Use a thick caramel dessert sauce when possible. A very thin sauce may spread too quickly and can make the bars excessively gooey.
Pecans: Chopped pecans provide the classic turtle-inspired flavor. Toasting them first is optional but highly recommended.
Chocolate chips: Semisweet chocolate helps balance the sweetness of the caramel and cookie dough. Milk chocolate can be used if you prefer a sweeter bar.
How to Make 4-Ingredient Turtle Bars
1. Prepare the Baking Dish
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch glass baking dish so the finished bars are easier to remove.
Take the refrigerated cookie dough out of its package and divide it into two portions.
Set aside roughly one-third of the dough for the topping.
2. Create the Cookie Base
Press about two-thirds of the cookie dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Use your fingertips to gently flatten it into a reasonably even layer.
Don’t worry if it takes a little patience. The warmth from your hands will soften the dough and make it easier to spread.
Try to cover the entire bottom of the pan without leaving thin spots.
3. Add the Caramel Layer
Pour 1 cup of caramel sauce over the cookie dough.
Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to gently spread it across the surface.
Leave a small border around the edges rather than pushing the caramel all the way against the sides of the pan. This can help reduce excessive bubbling and sticking during baking.
4. Add the Pecans and Chocolate
Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the caramel.
Follow with the semisweet chocolate chips.
Try to distribute both ingredients from edge to edge so every eventual square gets a little bit of that crunchy pecan and melted chocolate combination.
At this point, the pan is already starting to look like something special.
5. Add the Remaining Cookie Dough
Take the remaining one-third of the cookie dough and pinch it into small pieces.
Scatter these pieces over the top of the chocolate and pecan layer.
You don’t need to cover every inch completely. Leaving some spaces allows the chocolate and caramel to peek through as the bars bake.
6. Bake Until Golden
Place the pan in the preheated oven.
Bake for approximately 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges have developed a lightly crisp appearance.
Keep an eye on the bars toward the end of the baking time. Ovens can vary, and you don’t want to overbake them.
The center may still look slightly soft when you remove the pan. That’s perfectly fine—the bars will continue to set as they cool.
7. Cool Completely Before Cutting
This is probably the hardest part of the entire recipe: waiting.
Allow the bars to cool completely in the baking dish.
The caramel will be extremely soft while hot, so cutting into the bars too soon can result in messy squares.
For especially clean cuts, place the cooled pan in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
Then cut into 16 squares and serve.
